Hey I completely agree that sm is a terrible company, but that's 100% only because I've heard what you say about them. Could you plz let me in on what they've done that was so bad? I really want to know why I hate sm. XD (srsly tho I'm curious)
They underpay their idols a ridiculous amount, even the idols that have been within the company for years must get by on the bread crumbs that SM give them. Imagine how being a newly debuted idol would be like.
They are racist towards non-Korean idols, this has been confirmed by a member of JYJ/TVXQ (??) which may have been Jaejoong but don’t take my word for it, it was possibly another member.
They work their idols too hard, sending them to multiple places (by plane) in the span of only hours (which would induce horrible jet lag).
They tend to only favour the idols/groups who are making money compared to those who aren’t making as much, but are still just as talented (seriously, have you seen how many EXO comebacks there have been in the past year compared to f(x)?) which leads me on to my next point-
They’re a company who only uses the talents of others to gain a large profit and actually in no way cares how particular idols want to progress in their career. If it isn’t seen as profitable, it doesn’t happen.
An idol loses the freedom to express their artistic ability. If an idol chooses to write a few songs of their own and possibly feel like releasing a solo album, unless you’ve been in the company for a good seven years or longer, SM will most probably decline. And even if an idol is content doing what they are doing, SM will still push that idol into doing unwanted things if they deem it profitable.
Kris stated that he got threatened for his pay to be docked if he continued to argue with staff, the particular argument was about them cutting out one line in an EXO song that was his and he voiced how unfair he thought the decision was.
SM seem to have a reputation of not only threatening their idols but also physcially abusing them, a famous one is Baekhyun being slapped hard enough to make him cry by staff who then continued to pester him, making him yell “Leave me alone!” because he refused to do what they asked of him. SM stated this was a rumour started by international fans which is quite odd considering the first word of this came from Korean fans who were outside the SM building.
The idols within SM have harsh schedules and minimal rest, many EXO members have been seen stumbling off stages and almost fainting when making it backstage. Kris and Luhan went to the hospital multiple times while in the company because of their health conditions but, even then, got minimal rest and were practically worked to death. Tao had fractured bones and twisted ankles many times but was still made to perform on stage, possibly leading to permanent damage if he hadn’t left the company.
SM staff have also been seen being rude to fans, a famous incident being EXO’s past manager slapping a fan who was pushed in front of Tao at the airport. Tao attempted to look back to see if she was alright but continued to be pushed away by the manager.
A manager was also reported to have threatened EXO, some members even saying their manager was scary during interviews but simply laughing it off. It wasn’t until (apparently) Luhan said something that this manager was sued and fired. There are six managers in total.
As said on this blog before, there is strong suspicion that EXO’s instagrams are heavily monitored and controlled by SM which is most likely to be true.
SM lied to the public about how they treated their idols, all the information was exposed during Kris’ lawsuit but not many people noticed or cared as ‘Baekyeon’ suspiciously arose at the same time as the lawsuit. This leads to the belief that SM not only force idols together but use the attention to their advantage to promote groups and cover shady acts the company commits.
SM’s contract is also known as the ‘Slave Contract’ as it entitles that the person signing it will belong to their company for ten years. I don’t know if you know this but ten years is a long god damn time. Kris’, Luhan’s and Tao’s lawsuit against the company shows just how hard it is to break out of this contract.
Personal decisions - such as going to the military - will most likely be decided by the company so they can figure out which choice is more profitable for them and will have nothing to do with what the idol feels is right.
Very rarely are idols able to take a break, and even when taking a break there will still be work included. If there is an idol within their company that has a completely packed schedule (Lay - for example - goes on shows solo, acts, performes and promotes in China only to return to Korea and continue doing all these things not even an hour after getting off the plane) the idol will most likely not be able to rest. If an idol expresses their exhaustion the company will still make them attend. The only way an idol can skip an event is by either being horribly sick or passing out and having to go to the hospital.
Finally, SM treat their idols like dancing circus bears on chains, and unless the idol follows SM’s orders like a mindless drone they will not be respected by the company, no matter how many years they are in the company. There is no sense of respect or kind humane acts shown by SM to their idols.
That’s all I can remember from the top of my head, if anyone has anything to add please feel free to!
